Ole Miss's Lane Kiffin says the real 'Portal King' is a head coach from the Big 12 Conference

Ole Miss football ranked No.1 when using the transfer portal this off-season. Despite this, head coach Lane Kiffin believes somebody else deserves the title of most impactful head coach when using the portal.

The 'Portal King' or Lane Kiffin, if you prefer. That nickname has been bandied around over the last couple of seasons regarding the Ole Miss head coach and the transfer portal. Securing the No.1 ranked transfer portal class in 2024 helped with that, although he may disagree.

The On3 transfer portal 'X' account created a post asking fans who had been the 'GOAT' of the transfer portal era. Lane Kiffin or two other head coaches in Colorado's Deion Sanders or Oregon's Dan Lanning. The comments were a mixture of responses, not surprisingly with fans backing their head coaches, with plenty of "Where's Mike Norvell?"

Despite the majority suggesting it was Kiffin, the Rebels' head coach pointed to Colorado's Deion Sanders as the 'GOAT,' tagging the Colorado football 'X" account.

Despite Kiffin's nice comment, most would say that despite Deion Sanders using the transfer portal to significant effect for his team, he still won't make the top three as of now. With a good season in 2024, that narrative may change.

You look at Lane Kiffin, who guided Ole Miss to a program record 11-win season in 2024, while Dan Lanning got Oregon to a Pac-12 Championship Game in his second season with the Ducks. Both have successfully utilized the portal while having success on the field.

Ole Miss has been top 3 in transfer portal rankings for the last three years

Lane Kiffin and his staff had a successful transfer portal in 2024, finishing with the No.1 ranked class. This comes after the last two years with the No.2 ranked class, behind USC in 2022 and Colorado in 2023.

Having a high rank in the transfer portal or recruiting class is excellent. However, that needs to transition onto the playing field, something Lane Kiffin did with Ole Miss last season.

After winning the Peach Bowl last season, helping the Rebels achieve an 11-win season and a top-ten AP Poll ranking, Kiffin is now looking to take another step forward with the team. 2024, the goal is the playoffs and maybe an SEC Championship game. All this will be done with several transfers, proving that although he may be modest in his response, Kiffin could be the 'GOAT' of the transfer portal.
