Sad news came out of Oxford yesterday that Monte Kiffin, 84, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and friends. One of the greatest defensive coordinators in the NFL's history, Kiffin founded the original "Tampa 2" defense. During the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2002 Super Bowl-winning season, Kiffin's defense averaged under 12 points allowed per game.
You didn't have to know Monte Kiffin personally to know he was a great man; you just had to listen to everybody who did, speaking about their love and respect for him. After the sad news was announced on social media, players, coaches, and people who had crossed paths with Kiffin posted heartfelt messages about him.
""Monte Kiffin was not only a legendary and innovative coach who had an immeasurable impact on the game, but an exceptional human being who truly cared about others. He was a mentor to me, and so many others, and he will be dearly missed. My family and I send our heartfelt condolences to Robin and the entire Kiffin family.""Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris
Players such as Warren Sapp, Ronde Barber, and John Lynch, who played under him at Tampa Bay, posted their feelings about the great Monte Kiffin.

"“I love that man and am so indebted to him. Monte had a unique enthusiasm for life, football and family. He also had a passion for coaching - and helping people like myself become the best version of themselves. He was a great listener - he listened to his players. He was a funny man as well and he loved people. I’ll miss that man.”"San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch
Over his 50+ years in coaching, he had been on some of the best teams in the NFL and college. Tampa Bay, Minnesota, New Orleans, and Nebraska were some of many teams that shared their condolences.

After my first game as a head coach he came to our locker room and complimented the way our team played. His encouragement meant a great deal to me personally and professionally.
