Three Ole Miss Football players who will battle for their job in spring practice
With college football spring practices a few months out, the Ole Miss roster is taking shape. Who is at risk of losing their starting spot or the 2024 season?
Lane Kiffin and his staff have been active in the transfer portal, putting Ole Miss at the top spot in the transfer rankings. Competition for places will be competitive, with players looking to take the first steps in spring practice to push for starting roles.
The below three Rebels could feel pressure from other players on the roster for their starting roles in 2024.
Jordan Watkins, WR
Jordan Watkins had easily his best season in college football last season. The Louisville transfer has had two seasons with the Rebels, playing a vital role in both. Last season, Watkins finished with 53 receptions for 741 yards and three touchdowns.
This off-season, Watkins decided to stay for another year, along with receiver Tre Harris and tight end Caden Prieskorn. It was huge news for Lane Kiffin, getting high-level experience back on offense. Despite the experience, Jordan Watkins will have players in the receiver room looking to take snaps away from him.
One player that will be heading into his second season with the Rebels is Cayden Lee. A three-star recruit, Lee had five receprions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. As a true freshman, he showed his speed and YAC ability.
The second player to watch is 2024 JUCO recruit Deion Smith. In 2021, Smith registered 11 receptions for 186 yards and two touchdowns in his true freshman season. However, things did not work out, heading to Holmes C.C. for two seasons. Smith is talented, with experience in college football a bonus heading into the 2024 season.
Jordan Watkins is in the driving seat to continue his role as a key contributor in the Ole Miss offense. Watkins has the advantage of knowing the scheme, having played in the offense for two seasons. However, the two players mentioned will be looking for bigger roles.
