Ole Miss started its second week of fall camp, just over two weeks after its week 1 game against Furman. Fortunately (touch wood), the Rebels have seen no new injury concerns. One SEC team has, with reports suggesting Texas has been dealt a potential injury blow.
Longhorns star running back CJ Baxter has been reported to have suffered a knee injury during training. According to reports courtesy of Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com, Baxter will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
It will be a blow for Texas if it's determined that Baxter will miss a chunk of the 2024 season. The sophomore had an excellent first season, having 138 carries for 659 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Baxter also added 156 receiving yards from 24 receptions.
After the departure of record-breaking Bijan Robinson to the NFL, five-star recruit Baxter was seen as the next to the throne in the Texas backfield. However, Jonathon Brooks was the player to step up, with Baxter adding enough value as the No. 2 back.
With Brooks also departing to the NFL now, Baxter was looking to be the guy in his second season. If the injury is more significant than the team hopes it's not, it will be a blow for the Longhorns.
Texas still has talented running backs in the room, including Jaydon Blue, Quintrevion Wisner, and Jerrick Gibson. We will see the results of the MRI scan to see how long Baxter will miss the upcoming season. Hopefully, it won't be too long.
