With the 2016 expansion of the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, creating 3,458 additional seats, the same season saw plenty of the current top ten most-attended games at the stadium.
One of those was the week nine game against Auburn. The Tigers were looking for five straight wins, having the week before demolished #17 Arkansas 56-3. The Rebels were floundering under fifth-year head coach Hugh Freeze, losing back-to-back games over Arkansas and LSU heading into the Auburn clash.
The Rebels went toe-to-toe with Auburn, taking the lead by two points heading into the fourth quarter thanks to a touchdown from Damore'ea Stringfellow. However, a couple of field goals from Daniel Carlson had the Tigers leading again, the ninth lead change of the game. Ole Miss could not make it ten, with quarterback Chad Kelly throwing a bad interception on the next possession.
The Tigers made Ole Miss pay with a Kerryon Johnson touchdown, securing a 40-29 victory for Gus Malzahn's team.
Despite the third-highest attendance in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium history, the 2016 Egg Bowl is one Ole Miss fans would love to forget.
The game started well enough for the Rebels, with two touchdowns from Damore'ea Stringfellow keeping Ole Miss in touch at halftime. However, four unanswered touchdowns in the second half from the Bulldogs gave Dan Mullen's team an emphatic 55-20 win.
Both teams had over 500 offensive yards. However, turnovers on downs and two interceptions did not help the Ole Miss team. The win gave Mississippi State a bowl appearance, with the Rebels missing out.
The Egg Bowl turned out to be the last game for head coach Hugh Freeze, as he resigned in the summer of 2017 due to a school investigation.
