Ole Miss men's basketball begins its SEC Tournament run in Nashville on March 12 against a team that Chris Beard seems to know all too well.
After all, it is his former team. Also, because they just faced them this regular season.
Can Ole Miss pull it off against Texas?
The Rebels open their SEC Tournament against the Texas Longhorns; the same team that handed Ole Miss a 79-68 loss last month.
It was one where the wheels coming off of them was getting undeniable. The Rebels fought back in the second half, with Ilias Kamardine and Eduardo Klafke making some impressive shots which put them back on the board, and still in a position to win.
Tied 68-68 with under three minutes left, Ole Miss had a real chance to steal one on the road.
And that was exactly the point that highlighted what has been wrong with the Rebels this entire season; Texas made calculated, steadier plays, while Beard's squad continued to fail executions.
These late-game scoring droughts, and their offense going cold right when it matters the most has been the anchoer holding the Rebs down in most of their losses this season.
They tried to paper over the cracks with gritty performances against LSU, but sheer will can only carry a team so far before the fundamental flaws sink the ship.
A historically embarrassing losing record this season has all Rebels fans second-guessing their hopes ahead of the SEC Tournament. But if the Rebels can't make it to the Big Dance, the least they could do is crash the party and wreck the bracket for few of their rivals on their way out.
A team with nothing to lose is a dangerous animal, and Texas could be its first victim.
