Ole Miss football hardly expected the number to be this high.

Pete Golding had done an incredible job at retaining star players until some leaked term sheets drove a wedge straight between them and the program.

Golding lost some of his crown jewels, and then some, as the portal window reached a violent crescendo in its final days.

The surge in portal entries was a blindside hit that no one expected, but had to deal with anyway. Perhaps that was the biggest contributor to the portal damage tally reaching a concerning 22.

The number would have been 23, were it not for safety Anthony Robinson II withdrawing his commitment to stay with the Rebs.

Lee, a loss that stung Ole Miss the most, could also have been avoided had Chambliss's court verdict came earlier.

Lee was ready to stay in the Sip only if it was with Trinidad Chambliss. But the transfer protal pressure ultimately made him snap and commit to Missouri.

However, there's a tiny gleam of hope still as he is not yet enrolled with the Tigers.

The best that Golding can do now is wait with crossed fingers to get Chambliss back for the next season.
