The Ole Miss basketball team won their first game of the season against the Morehouse Tigers, but the game won’t count on the Rebels record.

The new and improved Ole Miss basketball team made its appearance on Thursday night as the Rebels took on the Morehouse Maroon Tigers.

As the Rebels took possession to start the game, the Rebels took a big lead over the Tigers, 18-3 within the first five minutes of the game.

The Tigers would reel in the Rebels and would make it a six-point game at the half.

From then on, the Rebels took over.

Ole Miss shot 70% in the second half, making 16 out of 23 shots. The Rebels would score a whopping 52 points in the second half.

Ole Miss would cruise on to a 90-66 victory over the Tigers.

So what did we learn from this scrimmage?

Cullen Neal is a really good point guard. Rebel fans will finally get a chance to see a legit point guard run the team this season.

While Kennedy has been known to run the offense through a point guard in the way of shooting, if tonight is any indication, the Rebels will look to pass the ball a lot more through the point.

While saying that, Neal did lead the team with 19 points tonight. He also had 7 assists and 5 rebounds.

More from Ole Miss Basketball

Deandre Burnett is the other guard the Rebels look to utilize this season. Burnett scored 17 points in tonight’s win, adding 2 assists to that number.

In the biggest surprise of the night for me, Rasheed Brooks also scored 17 points tonight. Brooks looked really good against Morehouse, something the Rebels will need to succeed this season.

Terence Davis and Sebastian Saiz round out the top-five in scoring for the Rebels. Davis scoring 14 and Saiz scored 11 against the Tigers.

One of the biggest takeaways from the game to me is the ability to rebound, something that has plagued the Rebels in the past few seasons.

While the game was against Morehouse, the Rebels did look promising. Including a duo of youngsters who made their Ole Miss debut.

Breein Tyree and Karlis Silins both made their debuts as Rebels, and both made mistakes in their debut.

While there were mistakes, Silins was the more impressive of the two to me. With some time in the weight room, he could be a monster down low.

Ole Miss opens their 2016-17 basketball season Friday, November 11th against Tennessee-Martin in The Pavilion.
