OHT’s SEC West Season Predictions
By Randy Morgan
Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers have been an up and down team for the past few seasons. It feels just like yesterday that Cam Newton was leading the Tigers to a BCS Championship. Things are different now. The Tigers are not expected to compete in the SEC this season, despite the defensive star Carl Lawson headlining the defensive line this season.
Randy –
Auburn was the sexy pick to win the SEC last season, and this season could not be any more different. The Tigers are not expected to cause any damage in the SEC, and are picked at the bottom of most preseason polls.
The Tigers return senior quarterback Jeremy Johnson to their team of QB’s. Johnson is matched up against junior John Franklin III and sophomore Sean White. The quarterback battle is one to watch at Auburn.
On the defense, the Tigers should be stout. Carl Lawson looks to rise up the NFL draft boards with a stellar season, and sophomore Byron Cowart is just waiting to breakout. Cowart is my pick for breakout player of the year.
Prediction: 5-7; last in the SEC West
Auburn could either be a really decent team, or a horrible team. No in between. Watch for the week three matchup with Texas A&M, that week will be a defining game for the season.
Kevin –
Auburn will have multiple questions on offense. The most glaring will be at the quarterback position. Defensive line will be impressive, but won’t be enough.
Prediction: 6-6; fifth in the SEC West
Tucker –
Auburn was pitiful last year especiallly at QB, but acquired a commitment from former 4-star and East MS CC QB, John Franklin. At first, you see him and can tell he’s raw and needs some polishing. When I see him, I see the spitting image of Nick Marshall. It is for that reason, I believe they will be better this year. However, they don’t have much talent returning at WR or RB and the defense will be young and unpolished outside of Carl Lawson and Montravious Adams.
Prediction: 6-6; fifth in the SEC West
Tyler –
This was a toss up to me between Auburn and Mississippi State. Auburn has been in a downward spiral ever since Gus Malzahn’s first year. Jeremy Johnson was supposed to lead the Tigers to the College Football Championship game last year but he ended up being a back up at the end of the season.
Auburn signed a back up JUCO QB to be the next Jeremy Johnson. That’s a huge chance to take on a JUCO QB. Like Jeremy Johnson I believe this will too fail, leaving Auburn with an anemic offense.
Prediction: 5-7; sixth in the SEC West
