Ole Miss Baseball: Rebels and Dogs Duel In Governors Cup Tonight
There’s A Lot
Don’t be fooled or misled by worthless smack inter-rivalry smack talk. This game means something to both schools. Of course, there is the actual ‘Cup’ itself. Also, there is the record, which since the inception of the neutral site game itself has MSU with the edge at 19-18. Yes, the record itself is very important. Everybody loves the bragging rights and the hardware which goes with it.
One can see this particular rivalry has always been close. Since the game was moved to TrustMark Park, ten games have been played with each team capturing 5 wins apiece.

So, obviously whoever gets the win tonight gets the Cup and the bragging rights for the next year. However, it’s not just the neutral site meeting record which is important. It’s also the rankings. Since 2007, these teams have only met twice where neither team was ranked. Out of the other 8 meetings since 2007, the higher ranked team won 4 meetings.
Obviously everything goes out the window in these games. One thing which is never-changing is the disdain the two universities have for each other. We want them as bad as they want us. No, there is no love lost between these two schools, teams or their fans. Also, there are no guarantees based on record or rankings. If that’s truly the case, then why are the records and rankings even important?
