Ole Miss football was victorious last weekend. Now we planned on seeing even more from the Rebels as they took on the Skyhawks of UT-Martin. Of course, there were a few things which stood out in the 45-23 win.

After last weekend, many Ole Miss football fans were left wondering just how good Ole Miss really is. With an offensive performance worthy of the ‘Great 8‘, Shea Patterson showed exactly what Rebel fans can expect this season. That’s the side of the ball which hung 47 points on South Alabama. The side of the ball which produced over 500 yards of total offense and a single-game receiving record for AJ Brown. Also the same side of the ball which allowed Shea to set a single game passing record against UT-Martin.

Then there’s the 800 lb gorilla in the room. The defense which allowed 27 points by South Alabama. The Crimedawg D is another element of Ole Miss football we are anxiously awaiting to see gear up. Gone is the Landshark D we have seen in the past. Last week there were glimpses of a great defense but we all know they have to get better and fast. Giving up 23 points to UTM may be a part of the defensive learning curve, but it could result in losses once the heat of SEC play hits us.

Then there is the special teams side of the ball. Last week against South Alabama was a Catch 22. While we saw Gary Wunderlich struggle at the tee, we also saw a kickoff return for a TD by Jaylon Jones. There were positives along with negatives, just like every aspect of Ole Miss football. Of course, now that we have three areas of observation, there are elements of each we can’t look away from in the UT-Martin victory. Let’s start with offense.
