Ole Miss Softball: Rebels Softball Heads South For Sun And Sand

Number 15 ranked Ole Miss softball is coming off a 3-1 record at the Sand Dollar Classic and now they are headed even further south.

The Ole Miss softball Rebels certainly lived up to expectations during the opening series of game in the 2018 season. The Rebel went to Gulf Shores and showed they will be a team which will be on top this season. With wins over Virginia Tech, Florida A&M and Lamar the Rebels finished the weekend 3-1. The Rebels are now ranked at No.15 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.

The 2017 Ole Miss softball team was fabulous as their season progressed and by season’s end left us wanting more. After a huge SEC tourney the Rebels carried us thru a very successful regional and the to UCLA. Although the Rebels fell short in the supers they are reaping the benefits of a very productive 2017 campaign. Of course, the Rebel are now on the map and travelling abroad.

After a very successful opening weekend the Rebel will travel to Puerto Vallarta. Mexico to take on even more top softball talent. Of course, beginning Thursday the Rebels will begin very tough four game streak in the sun and sand. The Rebels will have four games against some of the 2018 Ole Miss softball season’s toughest competition thus far’

What Lies Ahead

The Rebels will begin the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge tonight at 8pm CT against the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns come into the match-up with a 2-2 record from the Texas Classic this past weekend with wins over Incarnate Word and Wisconsin.

Friday afternoon Ole Miss softball will face the Houston Cougars at 2pm CT. The Cougars come into the College Challenge with a 3-1 record from the Aggie Classic with wins over Texas Tech (2) and Boston College.

Ole Miss will then complete the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge with two games on Saturday. The first match-up will have the Rebels facing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Rutgers comes into the Classic with a 2-3 record from this past weekend in the Titans Classic at Cal State Fullerton. The Knight’s wins came over Middle Tennessee and Utah State.

Ole Miss will close out it’s weekend Saturday night as they face the Oregon Ducks. Of course, the Ducks are coming into the the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge with a perfect 6-0 record from the Kajikawa Classic this past weekend. The Ducks had 6 wins which included No.25 Georgia and Missouri, The Rebels will face the No.3 Oregon Ducks Saturday evening at 8pm CT.

What To Expect

Looking at the Rebels schedule in Puerto Vallarta we can easily see the Oregon game will showcase the two best teams. With Oregon being the Rebels final game we can expect to see Mike Smith turn up the heat in the early games. Of course, Ole Miss softball will need momentum going into the game against the Ducks.

Of course, the Rebels will want to use their bats early. However, the strength of the Rebels lies in their pitching. We can expect coach Mike Smith to use his pitching corps to establish some authority in the Challenge before facing the Ducks.
