Ole Miss Softball: Rebels come back, beat Miss State in SEC Tourney

Coach Mike Smith and Ole Miss softball were back in action Thursday as they opened their SEC Tourney run by facing off against rival Miss State.

Coach Mike Smith and Ole Miss softball (37-16) opened their SEC Tourney Thursday as they faced in-state SEC rival Miss State (33-21) in College Station. The Rebels entered the 2019 SEC Tourney coming off a controversial series sweep at the hands of Georgia last weekend. Ole Miss would face Miss State who defeated Texas A&M in the first round Wednesday.

After two scoreless innings Miss State got on the board first with 3 runs in the top of the third to take the early 3-0 lead. Ole Miss answered with 1 run in the bottom of the frame to cut the MSU lead to 3-1.

Ole Miss took advantage of Miss State miscues in the circle and behind sophomore Abbey Latham‘s grand slam in the bottom of the fourth took a 8-3 lead. The Rebels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it9-3. The Bullies managed a run in the top of the seventh but the Rebels got the 9-4 win. In the 8-4 round-one win there were 4 Rebels who combined for 4 hits. Sophomore Jessica Puk led all Rebels at the plate going 1 for 2 while senior Brittany Finney and freshman Tate Whitley each went 1 for 3. Whitley had 1 RBI.

Of course the big hit of the day belonged to sophomore Abbey Latham (1HR) who went 1 for 4 with 4 RBI. Senior Kylan Becker, junior Kaylee Horton and freshman Mikayla Allee each had 1 RBI.

Junior left-hander Molly Jacobsen drew the start in the circle for Mike Smith and the Rebels going 2.0 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits with 1 K. Senior Brittany Finney entered in the third and went 5.0 innings allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits with 3 Ks.

Coach Mike Smith and Ole Miss softball will be back in action Friday as they face the Kentucky Wildcats. First pitch is set for 10am CT and the game will be televised via SEC Network. Good luck to the Rebels! BEAT THE CATS! Hotty Toddy!
