Last weekend Ole Miss softball had its weekend cut short because of inclement weather but this weekend they are the storm in Puerto Vallarta.

Ole Miss softball kicked off another weekend series of games Thursday in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The No.15 ranked Rebels (4-1) took on the Texas Longhorns (3-3) in their first game of the challenge. This match-up was huge for Ole Miss in the challenge as they wanted to build momentum for the weekend.

Of course Ole Miss softball was coming off a huge 3-1 weekend at the Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores. The Longhorns were coming off a 2-0 win over Rutgers in an earlier Thursday game. The Rebels relied on smart hitting and tough pitching to secure the huge 8-2 win in their first game. Lets look at the Rebels/Longhorns by the numbers.

In The Circle

More from Ole Miss Softball

Mike Smith gave senior Kaitlin Lee the go as starter for the match-up with the Longhorns. Lee went 4 complete and gave up only 4 hits allowing no runs. Lee had 1 K in her start and she picked up the win for the Rebels.

Morgan Bruce entered in the fifth inning and went 2 complete innings. Bruce gave up 1 earned run on one 1 hit while striking out 2 Horns batters. Elisha Jahnke entered in the seventh and finished out the circle for the Rebels. Jahnke allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits. Jahnke had 1 K.

Ole Miss softball is very solid in the circle with Lee. Of course, with pitchers like Bruce, Jahnke and others you know this Rebels pitching group is very good. However the story of this game may not have been in the circle as the Rebels showed up and showed out at the plate.

In The Box

Remember the storm I was speaking of earlier? Well this the one I was speaking of. At the plate 6 Rebels provided 8 runs on 11 hits. Autumn Gillespie had a 3 for 4 day at the plate. Gillespie also scored 2 runs. Freshman Ally Mena went 2 for 4 at the plate and knocked in 3 RBI. Senior Paige McKinney had a great game going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a run scored.

Other Rebels who produced in the box were junior Kylan Becker and senior Alex Schneider. Becker came up big at the plate going 2 for 2 and knocking in 1 RBI and scoring 2 runs. Schneider added a 1 for 5 night at the plate. Schneider had 1 RBI and scored a run. In a pinch hit situation Gabby Alvarez went 1 for 1.

When this Ole Miss softball team shows up at the plate they are almost unstoppable. The Rebels bats definitely fired up against Texas and it resulted in a 8-2 win over the Longhorns. This should be a boost headed to the next game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge and the Oregon game which lies ahead.
