Ole Miss softball was back on the road after a tough midweek loss to Memphis headed to face the No.15 Alabama Crimson Tide.

Ole Miss softball (15-11, 1-6) was back on the road Friday at Tuscaloosa to take on the No.15 Alabama Crimson Tide (21-7, 2-2). The Rebels were coming off a tough 9-3 loss at Memphis and needed to bounce back this weekend in SEC action. The Rebels lost their first 5 SEC games. However, the Rebels did close out the final game of the South Carolina series with a win. The Tide were coming off a comeback 10-5 win over UAB. Of course, that came after losing the last two games of their opening SEC series with Auburn.

Once again the Rebels jumped out early scoring 1 run in the top of the 1st. Alabama answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1 going into the 2nd. With the game still tied in the bottom of the 3rd the Tide scored 4 runs to take a 5-1 lead into the 4th. Still up 5-1 in the bottom of the 4th Bama poured on 8 runs to take push the lead to 13-1. The Rebels couldn’t produce anything in the top of the 5th and fell to the Tide in ten-run rule fashion.

The Rebels have struggled thru their recent games at the plate and it happened again against the Tide. The Rebels have shown they can get off to a strong start and did Friday but fell apart. Of course, it’s obvious the Rebels are in a funk right now. However they are still fighting and will eventually break out and start slugging again. For now we can just look at the stats and see where we fell short in game-one against Bama.

More from Ole Miss Softball

Freshman right-hander Ava Tillman drew the game-one start in the circle against the Tide. Tillman went 2.0 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits. Tillman also gave up 1 BB After Tillman began the 3rd junior right-hander Brittany Finney entered in relief and went 1.1 innings in the circle.

Finney allowed 5 earned runs on 3 hits while hanging 1 K and giving up 2 BB. Coach Mike Smith made the call in the 4th and senior right-hander Elisha Jahnke finished out the game in the circle for the Rebels. Jahnke went 0.2 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits.

At the plate the Rebels continued to struggle with only 4 batters producing 4 hits against very good Bama pitching. Freshmen Abbey Lathem and Jessica Puk both went 1 for 1 in pinch hit spots.

Senior Elantra Cox and sophomore Kaylee Horton both went 1 for 2 at the plate. Cox scored the only Rebels run while Horton extended her hitting streak to 4 consecutive games. Red-shirt sophomore Autumn Gillespie had 1 RBI. It’s difficult to watch a team slump the way the Rebels are. However, they have to be able to hit with more consistency if they expect to bounce back in the series against the Tide.
