With their midweek game against Central Arkansas cancelled, Ole Miss softball was focusing on the weekend series with No.10 Auburn.

There’s no doubt Ole Miss softball (16-13, 2-8) has been slumping. The Rebels were coming off a heart-breaking series loss against Bama and needed to make a statement in the midweek, however the midweek was cancelled. This left the Rebels with more time to focus on the weekend series which was coning against Auburn (32-6, 6-4).

After a scoreless 1st inning the Tigers got on the board first with 1 run in the 2nd. The Rebels responded with the tying run in the bottom of the frame. With the game tied 1-1 thru the next 3 frames, the Tigers struck with a 2-run homer in the top of the 6th and took the 3-1 lead. The Rebels couldn’t answer and the Tigers took the 3-1 game-one win.

Ole Miss softball continues to struggle at the plate. Inconsistency at the plate has plagued the Rebels and cost them games. It’s also put a tremendous amount of pressure on the pitching staff which was one of the things coach Mike Smith wanted to improve upon. Don’t give up on this team just yet. There is a lot of softball left and anything can happen. For now we look at Fridays game by the numbers.

By The Numbers

More from Ole Miss Softball

Senior right-hander Kaitlin Lee (10-6) took her place in the circle for the Rebels. Lee went complete for 7 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits. Lee had 4 Ks and 1 BB. The loss was Lee’s 6th on the season so far.

At the plate, there were 5 Rebels who combined for 6 hits. Sophomore Kaylee Horton extended her hitting streak to 7 games and also led all Rebels going 2 for 3 at the plate. Juniors Autumn Gillespie and Kylan Becker both went 1 for 3. Senior Paige McKinney also went 1 for 3 and had 1 RBI. Freshman Abbey Lathem also went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

This league features the very best in college softball from the pitching to the batting order. Ole Miss has to be fluid with its line-up hitting or this season could be very long. We know this team can rack up hits but they have to do it consistently to win in the SEC.
