Ole Miss softball was back in action this weekend on the road in a two-game non-conference series against University of Texas/El Paso.

Ole Miss softball (25-18, 5-13) hit the road this past weekend for a two game series against UTEP (18-28) in El Paso, Texas. The Rebels were coming into the UTEP series on a two game win streak and a 7-0 shutout win over Louisiana-Monroe. UTEP was coming into the series off a midweek 7-0 shutout of New Mexico.

The Rebels wasted no time getting cranked up and scored 1 run in the top of the 1st. After a scoreless 2nd and 3rd frames the Rebels added 2 runs in the top of the 4th to extend the lead to 3-0. UTEP threatened with 1 run in the bottom of the 5th but Ole Miss responded with a huge 5 run inning in the top of the 6th. With the Ole Miss lead now 8-1 the Miners attempted a rally in the bottom of the 7th with 3 runs but could manage more. The Rebels got the 8-4 decision.

The Rebels have stepped up their game lately. Ole Miss softball has been putting up impressive numbers at the plate. Of course, the Rebels would have to face UTEP in game-two of the two-game series. For now we look at the 8-4 game-one win by the numbers.

Game-One By The Numbers

More from Ole Miss Softball

Senior right-hander Kaitlin Lee (14-8) got the start in the circle for the Rebels. Lee went 5.0 innings and allowed just 1 earned run on 6 hits. Freshman right-hander Ava Tillmann entered in the 6th and went for 1.2 innings. Tillmann allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Tillmann had 2 Ks and 1 BB.

Coach Mike Smith made the call in the 7th and freshman left-hander Anna Borgen entered the circle. Borgen finished out the inning and the game for the Rebels. Borgen had 1 BB but her effort was enough for her first save.

At The Plate

In game-one 7 Rebels combined for 11 hits with 4 Rebels having multiple hit games. Junior Brittany Finney led all Rebels at the plate going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Senior Elantra Cox and sophomore Dylinn Stancil both went 2 for 4. Cox had 2 RBI.

Sophomore Autumn Gillespie also went 2 for 4 while senior Bry Castro went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI. Senior Paige McKinney went 1 for 3. McKinney had 1 RBI. Sophomore Kaylee Horton went 1 for 4 at the plate with 1 RBI. Once again the Rebels proved plate production goes a long ways toward tough victories.

Game-Two

Ole Miss softball entered the second game on a 3-game win streak and wasted no time getting busy. The Rebels scored 1 run in the top of the first to take the 1-0 lead. The Rebels then added 1 run in the top of the 3rd to make the score 2-0. The Miners managed a lone run in the bottom of the 3rd but the Rebels didn’t look back. Ole Miss added 1 run in the top of the 4th to take the 3-1 lead into the top of the 7th. The Rebels then added 4 runs to seal the 7-1 win.

This was a simple case of shutdown defense and double-digit plate production. Of course, we’ve seen what momentum at the right time of the season can mean for a softball team. Right now the Rebels have a four-game winning streak and solid offense and defense. Could this team be peaking at the right moment? We have to wait and see but for now we look at this 7-1 win by the numbers.

Game-Two By The Numbers

Senior right-hander Kaitlin Lee drew the start in the circle for the Rebels. Lee went 3.0 innings and allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits. Lee had 1 K and 1 BB. Freshman left-hander Anna Borgen (4-5) entered the circle in the 4th and went the distance. Borgen retired the final 12 batters and had 1 K. Borgen picked up her 4th win of the season.

Senior Elantra Cox and junior Brittany Finney also both went 2 for 4 at the plate. Finney had 1 RBI. Freshman Amanda Roth went 1 for 2 while freshman Abbey Latham went 1 for 1. Roth had 1 RBI.
