Ole Miss Football: Coach Matt Luke Makes Second Impressive Hire
Coach Matt Luke and Ole Miss football kicked off the new year with a second impressive hire, this time for the vacant offensive coordinator position.
Coach Matt Luke has now filled the vacant Ole Miss football offensive coordinator position with the hiring of Rich Rodriguez. Monday it was announced Rodriguez would be the new offensive coordinator for Ole Miss football filling the position vacated by coach Phil Longo who left Oxford for the same position at North Carolina.
With 32 years of coaching experience Rich Rodriguez brings a wealth of offensive knowledge to the Rebels staff. Rodriguez was previously head coach at West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona most recently. While at Arizona Rodriguez spearheaded one of the top offenses in the Pac-12 and the nation and brought the Wildcats their first 10 win season in over 15 years.
This was the second major hire for Matt Luke since the Rebels 2018 season ended Thanksgiving night. Former defensive coordinator Wesley McGriff was terminated the following day and Mike MacIntyre was hired December 10th as the new DC. MacIntyre was also a former head coach at Colorado where in 2016 he received national coach of the year honors bringing Colorado their first 10 win season in over 15 years.
What Luke Is Saying
Ole Miss Rebels
Coach Matt Luke has made two very surprising and significant hires for the coordinators positions at Ole Miss. Coach Luke realizes the importance of both positions and has filled them with two of the best prospects who could possibly be hired.
“Part of building a successful program means surrounding our players with the most talented coaches, and I feel like we have done that with hiring of Mike MacIntyre to lead our defense and now Rich Rodriguez to lead our offense,” Luke said.
There is no doubt the two hires will be good for the Ole Miss football program going forward and there is already excitement building in Oxford in anticipation of the 2019 season. After a dismal 2018 season we can see coach Matt Luke is serious about building a better more quality program on the field. Both hires will help the Ole Miss football program going forward.
The significance of both new coaching hires is apparent. Both MacIntyre and Rodriguez bring experience as coaches and are both very good recruiters which bodes well for Matt Luke who has demonstrated he can ink great recruiting classes. With the regular LOI signing period just over a month away we can be certain the new Ole Miss staff members will be very busy.
