With National Signing Day just around the corner Ole Miss football recruiting is heating up with a number of official visits this weekend.

February 6th is now just over two weeks and excitement has been building around the new staff additions for Ole Miss football. The new hires of offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre have also created a new buzz when it comes to recruiting and some of the top targets for Matt Luke and the Ole Miss staff.

This weekend is expected to be a huge one for Ole Miss football recruiting with hopes of locking down some big commits and possibly create some flips in the process. The current 2019 signing class sits at 25 signees from the early signing period and coach Matt Luke and the Ole Miss staff hope to close out 2019 with some more big signees.

There are eight high school players who are expected to be in Oxford this weekend. Most will arrive early Friday and stay thru Sunday having a chance to get to know the staff, current players and mainly the other commits who will be weighing Ole Miss as their landing spot on February 6th.

One of the expected official visitors is 4-star wide receiver Jonathan Mingo of Brandon, Mississippi. Mingo has been a solid commit for the Rebels however there are other schools which have serious interest in the Under Armor All-American. Mingo is also being courted by Miss State and Georgia.

Also taking an official visit this weekend is 3-star defensive end Brandon Mack of Montgomery, Alabama. While Mack has declared to be solid Ole Miss there are other schools which are making plays for the 6’4 240lbs DE.

\Mack is also being sought after by Pitt and LSU however he is expected to be a lock for the Rebels. The only other commit the Rebels have is 6’6 306lb guard Caleb Etienne of New Orleans who while not visiting this weekend is considered a hard Ole Miss commit and expected to ink with the Rebels.

Rebels Open Targets

As with any recruiting class there are always going to be those players who are weighing their options. Some players may be committed to schools and yet still want to experience the recruiting process and get their officials out-of-the-way. Then there are those who are considered open targets and every school has a chance.

This weekend Ole Miss football recruiting will be hosting a number of ‘open’ targets. One of the biggest ‘open’ targets is 4-star JUCO inside linebacker Lakia Henry of Vidalia, Georgia and Dodge City Community College. Henry is considered the No.1 ILB in this class and the No.3 overall prospect in the nation.

Another ‘open’ prospect and the biggest story of the weekend is 5-star Mississippi and Under Armour All-American standout Jerrion Ealy. Ealy who set a UA All-American Game rushing record quickly decommitted from Ole Miss. Ealy who is expected to be a top draft pick in the 2019 MLB Draft is on campus and will take an official visit in Oxford. Ealy who would be awesome in the Rich Rod offense is also considering Miss State and Clemson.

Late Merry Flipmas?

The Ole Miss football program has been in precarious positions before. There have been times in the past in which Ole Miss has seen itself swinging the big catch into the boat at the clock? This weekend is set up for some great catches.

Tis the season to make a statement in your football program. For Ole Miss there are a number of players who have committed to other schools As we stated earlier there will be prospects who just want to experience the entire recruiting process.

The impact coach Matt Luke and Ole Miss makes on these following recruits remains to be seen. While we don’ t like to bank on ‘flips’ we do enjoy speculating on where the sudden interest of Ole Miss might lie and where they might land. These are the players we call ‘hard’ targets and they are the big fish.

Spivey is a 3-star running back out of Phenix City, Alabama is a big get for Rich Rod to simply commit to an official visit. Spivey at 6’0 and 208lbs would be perfect in the Ole Miss backfield but Ole Miss has some tough competition. Spivey is committed to Arkansas.

McDaniel is a 3-star 6’3 250lb outside linebacker from Tifton, Georgia and is rated as one of the top outside linebackers to be signing late. How the OLB could figure into Mike MacIntyre’s defense would be very interesting. McDaniel is hard on Kentucky so a flip would be big for the Rebels.

Cox is a 3-star 6’5 and 300lb defensive tackle out of Mobile, Alabama. Cox has the size and speed to be very productive in the 3-4 defense which will be implemented in Oxford in 2019. Cox is considered a hard commit for Tennessee but is also being chased by Auburn.

Flott is a 3-star cornerback out of Saraland, Alabama. As badly as Ole Miss needs good DBs Flott would be a good catch for Mike MacIntyre. Flott is currently listed as a signee for LSU but is scheduled to be on campus in Oxford this weekend.

Plumlee is rated as a 4-star athlete out of Oak Grove in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. At 6’1 and 185 Plumlee is a very good dual threat QB. Considered a hard commit for Georgia Plumlee is weighing his options and being chased by Miss State and Florida State.

James is rated as a 3-star cornerback out of Spanish Fort, Alabama. James is 6’0 and 170lbs and much like Flott would be a great catch for Mike MacIntyre. Considered a hard commit for Oregon James is also being courted by Auburn.
