Ole Miss Football: 2019 Recruiting Expectations And NSD Predictions
February 6th will mark National Signing Day and expectations Rebels have when it comes to Ole Miss football recruiting and the final ranking.
When it comes to the 2019 Ole Miss football recruiting class you have to be able to appreciate what coach Matt Luke was able to do thus far. The early signing period saw 25 future Rebels ink with Ole Miss and we still haven’t gotten to National Signing Day just yet. So with just over a week left before NSD we are looking at some different players and making a few predictions.
The 2019 Ole Miss recruiting class has already seen its own share of success and now with NSD looming we are looking to close out strong. This past weekend saw a number of prospects who were in Oxford on official visits and some could be what makes this a better class than the Rebels are currently ranked. Of course, they could fall in the rankings as well but there are those players who could make this class a success.
Our Expectations
Ole Miss Rebels
While it is very easy to get our hopes a little too high we do have our own expectations for the 2019 Ole Miss football recruiting class. So far we have seen coach Matt Luke do a great job in the early signing period with the current No.25 class in the nation. If you aren’t impressed just consider he did it with a make-shift staff at best and now after two great hires at the Ole Miss coordinators positions Luke has some serious leverage leading into signing day.
While there are other schools chasing long-time Rebels commit Jonathan Mingo it appears as though Mingo knows he would be a great part of the NWO and is a receiver who could actually take the nation’s best WR corps to the next level. It is expected Mingo will ink with the Rebels even though Miss State and Georgia are still in the mix and in some pundits projected landing spots for the Under Armor All-American.
Another expected signee is 3-star DE Brandon Mack out of Montgomery, Alabama. Mack indicated sometime he was solid on Ole Miss and for him to change now would be a major surprise to most Ole Miss football fans. There is no doubt Mack would be exciting to watch in the Mike MacIntyre 3-4 defense and is certain to be an immediate impact player for the Rebels.
So About Predictions
What would National Signing Day be without going out on a limb and making a few predictions aka getting our hopes up? We have a few angles we have looked at and can see where we would like to see a few targets fall. Under Armor All-American and 5-star Jerrion Ealy is certainly a prospect who coaches Matt Luke and Rich Rodriguez would like to see ink in Oxford but who really knows what Ealy will do in the final days and moments before February 6th.
While we all would love to see Ealy land as a Rebel it is expected he will go the MLB route regardless of where he signs to play college football. It’s a shame if he goes to Clemson and even worse should he land at Miss State. Ealy would be the ink on the #MississippiMade brand begun by Matt Luke himself. The one thing which bodes well for Ole Miss is the fact Ealy is a dual-sport athlete who intends to play football and baseball should he forego the 2019 MLB Draft.
Prediction: Jerrion Ealy inks with Ole Miss despite the last-minute drama.
Another dual sport athlete who also split time between Ole Miss football and Ole Miss baseball this past weekend is 4-star dual threat QB John Rhys Plumlee out of Oak Grove in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. While a number of people have speculated Plumlee will sign with Georgia it seems as though his official visit went well in Oxford. The fact Plumlee could also play baseball for the Rebels is another reason he might choose Ole Miss however Plumlee is scheduled to take his official visit to Florida State this coming weekend. Also in the mix for Plumlee is Miss State and Auburn.
Prediction: John Rhys Plumlee chooses Ole Miss over FSU and Georgia.
Then there is 4-star JUCO linebacker Lakia Henry out of Dodge City Community College in Kansas. Henry was on campus this past weekend and from what we gather he was proclaiming a tie between Ole Miss and Arkansas but also noted he has an upcoming official visit at Texas. Henry is a very hard target for Ole Miss and would easily be an immediate impact player in the Mike MacIntyre defense. Formerly committed to Tennessee it is expected Henry will choose his destination between Arkansas, Ole Miss and Texas on February 6th.
Prediction: Lakia Henry chooses Ole Miss over Texas and Arkansas.
So as the next week goes by OHT will be hoping our predictions or wish-list rather will come true but we can never tell what may go down between now and next Wednesday. What we do know is coach Matt Luke and this staff will be working hard to make NSD a huge success.
