Ole Miss football just finished its ninth practice of the spring and now we are getting more news from the Rebels practice field.

Tuesday coach Matt Luke and Ole Miss football finished their ninth spring practice. The Rebels had a closed scrimmage Saturday which coach Luke believes was the best scrimmage the Rebels have had so far. In the Tuesday practice the Rebels worked to clean up mistakes and hit on the finer points from the Saturday scrimmage.

Thanks to David Johnson at OMSpirit we learned more about the Saturday scrimmage and heard about some of the Rebels who stood out. From what we gather the Rebels defense stood out the most in the scrimmage with JUCO transfer LB Sam Williams intercepting a pass for a pick-six. Also mentioned by coach Luke were senior OLB Qaadir Sheppard and senior DL Austrian Robinson on the defensive side of the ball.

From the offensive side of the ball coach Luke mention senior OT Michael Howard and sophomore RB Tylan Knight who both apparently stood out in the closed scrimmage. Luke went on to discuss the importance of the offensive linemen being able to play in different positions across the front.

Luke also mentioned not having to rely on incoming linemen who won’t be on campus until May. Luke did go on to say there would be a need for those bodies to create depth on the offensive line in the fall.

Luke also talked about the progress red-shirt freshman QB Matt Corral has made thru the Rebels ninth practice and it appears Corral is progressing well. When asked about the areas where Corral had improved the most Luke replied…

"“I think just his presence. If he makes a mistake, not losing his cool and just be ready to play the next play. You can just really tell he’s been out there and he’s done it for a full year.” ~Coach Matt Luke"

The Injury Bug

Football is a very physical sport and some injuries are expected even in spring practice. Thanks to Chuck Rounsaville of OMSpirit we have a much better idea of the who and what surrounding the Rebels wounded. These are the Rebels we know are in green shirts. Senior TE Jason Pellerin is in concussion protocol  Junior DE Tariqious Tisdale has a strained hip but appears to be nothing serious.

Also in green shirts this spring have been senior CBs Jaylon Jones and Jalen Julius as well as  senior S Montrell Custis, senior DT Benito Jones and junior WR Braylon Sanders. All of these players are expected to be out or limited thru the duration of the Rebels spring practices.

Some good news was seeing senior TE Octavious Cooley, senior S Armani Linton, senior DT Josiah Coatney and senior OL Alex Givens out of green shirts for the Tuesday practice. According to Rounsaville, Givens was the only player which was limited in the practice session.
