Coach Matt Luke and Ole Miss football have seen some staff changes and with new coaches OHT wants Rebels fans to know what we are getting.

After a tumultuous 2018 Ole Miss football season which saw the Rebels finish with a 5-7 record we saw head coach Matt Luke make some significant staff changes. With the departures of both Wesley McGriff and Phil Longo Matt Luke made two new coordinator hires in coaches Mike MacIntyre and Rich Rodriguez.

Naturally with the new coordinators it was to be expected there would be more staff changes coming and they did. Coach Mike MacIntyre brought the new 3-4 defense to Oxford which depends greatly on the linebacker position and with that came more changes. Former LBs coach Jon Sumrall departed for UK which left the position open for a new coach and Mike Mac went after one of the best in Tyrone Nix.

Over the years the Nix name has become popular on the Rebels staff. Derrick Nix is the brother of Tyrone Nix and has been a mainstay in the staff coaching RBs. Of course, this isn’t the first stint in Oxford for Tyrone Nix as he served as DC and LBs coach for the Rebels from 2008 thru 2011.

Nix of course was an outstanding LB for Southern Miss during his college playing days. Nix began his coaching career at USM in 1995 where he coached DTs before coaching OLBs and DBs. In 2001 Nix was named DC and coached LBs before leaving for South Carolina in 2004.

While in Columbia Nix served as co-DC and coached the DL, LBs and ILBs over a three-year period before landing the DC job at Ole Miss. In 2012 Nix became co-DC and LBs coach at Middle Tennessee State.

In 2015 he was named as DC at MTSU where he continued to coach LBs. In 2017 he was a defensive analyst at Texas A&M before coaching safeties at Virginia Tech during the 2018 season. With over 24 years of coaching experience Nix has been involved in the success of some great college programs and great players.
