Ole Miss Football: Know Your Coaches, Jeff Koonz, LBs

With the new staff which Ole Miss football inherited over the offseason we have some new faces for Rebels fans to get to know.

We watched as coach Matt Luke made some changes with his staff heading into 2019. Some coaches were fired and some coaches departed for other jobs. One new addition we saw was on the defensive side of the ball at the coordinator position with the hiring of Mike MacIntyre as the Rebels new DC and his new 3-4 defense.

With the Rebels new defensive coordinator and the new defensive scheme we knew there would be more changes within the staff. Former linebackers coach Jon Sumrall found what he believes will be greener pastures in Lexington and that left an open spot with spring practice already underway. Enter new ILBs coach Jeff Koonz.

A graduate of Auburn a young Jeff Koonz has made a name for himself in his career working his way up thru the collegiate ranks. Beginning his college coaching career at Auburn as a graduate assistant in 2004 Koonz also served as a GA at Texas in 2005 and 2006.

In 2007 Koonz became the secondary coach at Iowa State before returning to Texas in 2009 where he handled QC for the defense. In 2010 he went to La Tech where he coached LBs for 4 seasons.

After Louisiana Tech Koonz spent the next three seasons working his way up from safeties and LBs to become co-DC. In 2017 Koonz headed to North Texas State where he spent the past two seasons as LBs coach. Koonz was promoted to co-DC before taking the Ole Miss job. In an interesting twist his father is the head football coach at Holmes Community College.
