No.11 Ole Miss baseball was in action this weekend and a large part of their series win success resulted from catcher Cooper Johnson.
Ole Miss baseball has been having an up and down season but have found success in recent weekends. The Rebels have won 5 of their last 6 SEC games with a three-game sweep of No.6 Texas A&M and a series win over No.9 LSU. The Rebels have been rolling as of late and it has been because of outstanding play from a number of players.
Monday the SEC announced its Player of the Week and Cooper Johnson got the tab. Over the weekend series at the plate against LSU, Johnson hit at a .545 clip going 6 of 11 with 5 RBI thru three games. Behind the plate Johnson allowed just 1 stolen base from the Tigers. Johnson went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI in Sundays wild series win. OHT takes a closer look at Cooper Johnson.
A Closer Look
Ole Miss Rebels
So far this season junior Cooper Johnson has been prolific in the box and behind the plate for the Rebels. After a rough freshman season Johnson has steadily improved in the box and currently is hitting .288 and getting better with each game. The LSU series proved it. Johnson currently has a slugging percentage of .482 and an on-base percentage of .386 with 6 HRs and 23 RBI.
Behind the plate in 2019 Johnson has made 44 appearances with 41 starts and has proven to be one of the best catchers in college baseball with one of the most accurate throwing arms from behind the plate. So far in 2019, Johnson has a .987 fielding percentage and 348 POs with 42 assists. Cooper Johnson has stepped forward as the new catcher in a long line of great Rebels behind the plate.
