Ole Miss baseball kicked off their season this past weekend with a three game sweep against the University of Delaware Blue Hens.

The 2023 season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the Ole Miss Rebels baseball squad as they completed a three game sweep of Delaware this past weekend, ending two of the games early due to the run rule.

The series got kicked off this past Friday which served as the defacto college baseball opening day. The Rebels’ would undoubtedly have an extra pep in their step as they were celebrating last year’s national championship with a plethora of opening day festivities as well as introducing some upgrades to Swayze Field.

The Blue Hens were clearly outmatched in this series as Ole Miss would end up winning all three contests by a combined 29 run margin, scoring 35 and giving up 6 over the course of the three days. Their 35 runs on the weekend are the most on opening weekend since 2008.

The Rebels got out to their hot start on Friday winning 11-2 including four home runs on the night. The home run hitters included Peyton Chatagnier, T.J. McCants, Will Furniss, and Ethan Gross. Hunter Elliot pitched five innings as the starter on the mound.

Ole Miss followed up Friday’s dominant performance on Saturday winning 10-0 and ending the game early due to the run rule. They then rolled right into Sunday picking up exactly where they left off.

Sunday’s game would see the Rebels end the game early again winning by a score of 14-4. Junior Jacob Gonzalez hit a grand slam in the second inning and would drive in seven runs overall on their way to the blowout victory.

While Delaware isn’t exactly SEC caliber competition, The defending national champions took care of business in their opening weekend and look poised to be a contender once again.

Ole Miss baseball will be back in action against Arkansas State Tuesday, February 21st at 4:00 p.m. at Swayze Field.
