The 2025 midseason is in full swing, and the developments so far have made up for some top-tier college football drama.
Florida finally decided to put their foot down with Billy Napier on Sunday, and announced that the program would be moving on from him. So did Penn State with James Franklin.
Both of these put the coaching carousel in motion, and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has been a top name across replacement lists.
On the other end of the firing was hiring, or should we say making sure your hire stays with the program. The Indiana Hoosiers extended head coach Curt Cignetti's contract to an eight-year, $93 million one earlier this week.
The approximate $11.6 million annual salary makes Cignetti the third-highest paid coach in college football, falling just behind Georgia's Kirby Smart and Ohio State's Ryan Day.
But what does any of it have to do with Kiffin getting richer, you ask? Here's how:
Kiffin expecting a contract extension from Ole Miss
Both Florida and Penn State have been highly rumored to be the programs that Kiffin could ditch Ole Miss for. It has created this undeniable pressure on the program to do whatever they could to keep Kiffin around, and give it their best shot.
And the Rebels front office is going promptly about it. AD Keith Carter announced that a contract extension for Kiffin is in the works.
A couple of thoughts, FWIW:
— Everything Ole Miss (@EverythingRebs) October 19, 2025
1. Lane Kiffin loves it here. His family loves it here. He has complete control here. He’s home.
2. Keith needs to get this deal done asap. Worst case scenario is a repeat of 2022 with the unnecessary distractions this causes the rest of the…
And looking at the current college football scenario, the best shot from Ole Miss looks like a good hefty contract for Kiffin, one that schools looking to poach Kiffin can't match.
Ole Miss knows that both Florida and Penn State front offices would most likely be giving Kiffin a call to lure him away from Oxford, and that will probably come with a number that is higher than his current contract with Ole Miss.
His current contract runs through December 2030 and adds up to roughly $9 million per year, plus $2.5 million in bonuses.
Since Kiffin's stock is skyrocketing in the coaching market, Ole Miss needs to up their game with their contract extension proposal.
And Indiana offering Cignetti a contract high enough to make him the third-highest paid coach in college football puts even more pressure on the Rebels to put up a higher number than they initially planned on.
Be it the fear of other programs poaching him when Ole Miss looks just on the cusp of being a possible national title contender, but Kiffin's new contract extension will most likely come with hefty numbers.
One that will definitely make Kiffin richer.
