Ole Miss left Florida with its tails between its legs, losing 24-17, and with it, its playoff hopes evaporated. The performance was more like what we saw against Kentucky than the Georgia win, with several critical decisions gifting the win to the Gators.
It's a tough pill to swallow for the Rebels, who put up a program-defining performance against Georgia in Week 12. However, it was not followed up when it matters, with Florida head coach Bill Napier ending the playoff hopes of rival SEC teams in consecutive weeks.
Missed 3rd down conversions and dropped catches
The Ole Miss offense and staff must look in the mirror and ask what they could have done better. Receivers suffered from a case of butterfingers, dropping several balls and killing offensive drives. Wide receiver Antwane Wells has had some clutch plays this season, including against Georgia. It wasn't his or Jordan Watkins' day today.
Tre Harris leaving in the second quarter with an injury and not returning may have been a turning point on offense. He has missed the last three games, with the offense functioning fine without him.
Going 3-15 on third downs will not help you win games; this isn't all on the players. The play calling was questionable, with Jaxson Dart as a lead blocker for JJ Pegues on a fourth-down play that was blown up.
Three times, the Rebels entered the red zone, leaving with zero points, one of which was a missed field goal. Ole Miss found out that 0-3 in the red zone will not cut it.
Even after playing poor offense for most of the game, the Rebels were handed the ball twice in the last three minutes. Jaxson Dart gave it everything but couldn't put together one of those famous drives, turning the ball over two times.
Ole Miss still has the Egg Bowl next week, with a win very much needed to salvage some of the season. Then, a Bowl game that could showcase what the future holds for the Rebels in 2025.
