Lane Kiffin has been speaking in circles and refusing to be direct about any and all coaching rumors swirling around him, especially the Florida rumors.
The ambiguity of his answers has created a sort of upset in Oxford, leaving fans anxious about whether he will leave Ole Miss mid-season.
A breath of relief came when Kiffin's automatic contract extension kicked in after their win over Oklahoma, as it was his fifth-straight season with seven or more wins, earning him a contract extension.
The extension adds another year with a seven-win season, and it now stretches through the 2031 season.
The only caveat is Kiffin hasn't signed it yet.
Why Lane Kiffin delaying his contract extension is good for Ole Miss
There is always the factor that Kiffin is probably waiting to hear offers from other schools.
Other schools on the lookout to poach Kiffin put more pressure on AD Keith Carter to match Ole Miss's contract to them, leveraging his way into a massive raise.
Yahoo Sports' Ross Delenger reports that Ole Miss has made "attempts" to give Kiffin a better deal, but the 50-year-old coach has decided to wait before signing a new contract extension with the program.
However, Kiffin delaying signing his contract has benefitted Ole Miss atheletics to a certain extent as well.
By not signing his extension yet, in two weeks Lane Kiffin has:

- leveraged his way into a massive raise
- driven donations to athletics by millions
- motivated fans to show up and be loud for every home game left
So stop asking why he hasn’t signed an extension yet. That’s why pic.twitter.com/vetcSK0FTI
While there is no established connection between the two events, the Ole Miss athletics department has been receiving plenty of donations lately. The number is in millions.
Another thing that is affected by Kiffin and has been directly influenced by him is Ole Miss having a relatively packed and loud stadium for home games.
For all of the people making assumptions about fan attendance,

Try to remember this:
- Ole Miss has the 3rd smallest student body in SEC
- has 25 k local residents
- in the least populated state in the SEC (that has 2 SEC schools)
- still sells out every SEC home game https://t.co/fhxA1azglu
When it isn't, Kiffin doesn't hesitate in calling them out either.
Either way, be it because of Kiffin's delayed contract or not, Ole Miss football will have some good money when they go out shopping in the transfer portal this offseason.
