No.1 JUCO transfer is ready to go for Ole Miss football in 2024
The questionable arrival of Deion Smith to Oxford has been put to bed. The No.1 JUCO transfer will be on campus this week, ready to join his teammates for fall camp. It's a significant boost for head coach Lane Kiffin, who was uncertain whether Smith would make any part of the pre-season schedule.
Smith informed 247Sports Inside the Rebels that he had achieved the grades needed to enter college. It makes the Ole Miss wide receiver depth chart arguably the best two-deep room in college football.
After David Johnson of Inside the Rebels posted the news regarding Smith, he reposted with a comment that would excite Rebel fans.
The former 2021 four-star recruit committed to LSU and started his freshman season with a bang. In the week 3 match-up against Central Michigan, Smith had five receptions for 135 receiving yards and caught two touchdowns. He then moved to junior college for the 2022 season.
After two seasons at Homes Community College, he looked to return to the FBS level. In his past season, he finished with 1,063 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games. With offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn, and Utah, Deion Smith chose the Rebels.
Smith will join Tre Harris, Jordan Watkins, Antwane Wells, Ayden Williams, and Cayden Lee as a sextet of talented wide receivers at the top of the depth chart.
The Ole Miss passing game will be a problem next season
The Ole Miss passing game will be fun to watch this season with the above guys, not to mention tight ends Caden Prieskorn and Dae'Quan Wright. The versatility of the above players will cause havoc for opposing defenses.
Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. could utilize two tight end sets this season. Both Prieskorn and Wright are excellent pass catchers, so either one can give the opposition the look of a blocker and transition into a pass catcher.
Add in the different looks of the wide receivers on the field. They could start with Antwane Wells in the slot, with Tre Harris and Jordan Watkins on the outsides. We could have Deion Smith out of the slot on the next play, with Harris and Wells outside.
The top six wide receivers Ole Miss has are not freshmen; they can come onto the field when needed and feel comfortable. We won't see the Rebels switching in and out at a high percentage, but enough to keep the opposing defenses on their toes. Having to cover different styles of receivers is not easy for defensive backs and linebackers.
As Ole Miss fans, think about the passing offense from last season and times that by 5, that's the ceiling we could see this 2024 season.
