The Southeastern Conference announced their end of the regular season awards, with only one Ole Miss player, Matthew Murrell, making the cut.
At the 20-game mark, fans were more than happy with how the first season of the Chris Beard tenure was heading. However, the last ten games have seen the Rebels season crumble away, with only two wins over Missouri, who went 0-18 in the Southeastern Conference.
One consistent spark on the roster has been guard Matthew Murrell. The Memphis-born Murrell was named by the Southeastern Conference on the ALL-SEC Second Team, along with Josh Hubbard of Mississippi State and others.
Matthew Murrell and Josh Hubbard will compete for the Howell Trophy later today, awarded to the best male basketball player in Mississippi.
Murrell has been impactful throughout the season, leading the team in scoring, averaging 16.3 PPG. He has had nine games scoring over 20 points, with a high of 26 in two games against Missouri and Southern Miss. He also led the team in steals, making ten in one game against Troy.
It's been Murrell's season in his four with the Rebels. However, he told reporters it would be his last in an Ole Miss jersey. The Pavilion saw Matthew Murrell perform for the last time on Saturday against Texas A&M, though he will appear at least once more for the Rebels in the SEC Tournament this week.
