The Michigan Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore Wednesday night, and the firing came at the perfect time for Ole Miss football.
After Lane Kiffin left the Rebels for LSU in the thick of the College Football Playoff, newly appointed head coach Pete Golding has been handling the staff rebuild.
Golding's intentions of building a team of his own became clear on Tuesday when he replaced Charlie Weis Jr., previously Kiffin's OC at Ole Miss, with JD Baker. The hire was not just a statement to Kiffin, but also for the whole of college football.
And Moore's firing perfectly sets up the stage for Golding to take the hiring process to the next step.
Pete Golding could call Michigan staffers
Moore's sudden firing has left the Wolverines in a pickle. With the coaching carousel just winding up for the season, they have little to no candidates to replace Moore right away. Most of the top-shelf candidates have already signed their new contracts.
While the program finds a head coach, some staffers will be on the lookout for better opportunities, after how Michigan's last two coaches have been fired.
That's where the Rebels come in. Already in the rebuilding phase, Michigan's staff would be a goldmine for Golding to tap into, especially since the current Ole Miss staff's future is in the balance.
The chance to coach in the College Football Playoff right away will add a touch of irresistibility to Golding's pitch to a certain level for the Wolverines staff.
It will be no surprise if some calls are made and new hires are announced in the following weeks.
