When the Week 13 AP Poll was announced on Sunday, many were scratching their head on why Ole Miss was below Georgia, after dominating them a week earlier and ranked above them.
Thankfully, the Associated Press won't decide the 12 teams competing in the College Football Playoff. The CFP committee will likely avoid making the same mistake tonight, especially if they follow the discussed guidelines.
The CFP committee was impressed with Ole Miss's body of work
Ole Miss was on a bye week in Week 12, while Alabama beat FCS team Mercer, and Georgia had an excellent win over No.7 ranked Tennessee. Despite the win, Georgia should not be ranked above the Rebels because they were convincingly beaten less than two weeks ago.
The committee has said they look at wins and losses as they come, not considering how early or late a loss comes in the season and vice versa with wins. They were very impressed with Ole Miss's body of work and the victory over Georgia. Therefore, the Bulldogs, handling No.7, ranked Tennessee by two scores the week after the Ole Miss loss, validates the Rebels' win even further.
Despite Georgia beating Tennesse, that should not change the fact that Ole Miss should slip below the Bulldogs. The Rebels beat the Bulldogs by 18 points and allowed just three second-half points. Surely Lane Kiffin's team should not be punished by being idle?
Alabama was also ahead of Georgia, predominantly thanks to its win over Georgia. There is an argument that Ole Miss should be above both, but the ship that sailed after that was a drama from last week's rankings.
Georgia would have to jump both teams for it to make sense, with Alabama beating FCS side Mercer, which is about as glowing to a team's résumé as being idle.
My guess, and what I believe is the right thing to do, is to keep all three in the same order, all moving up two spots, with Tennessee and BYU slipping below them. We will see what surprises, if any, the CFP committee has in store for us late tonight.
