No one expected what Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch had planned for their first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Sure, everyone knew they needed a receiver, but going for a wideout that the entire league pegged as a Round-3 prospect at best as the first pick of Round 2 was a curveball no one saw coming.
The Niners had just signed Mike Evans on a 3-year contract. On paper, San Francisco could have easily waited for a Round 3 slide, but there was a particular reason they did not want to gamble on Stribling and potentially lose him to another team. It's getting clearer now with the initial shock wearing off.
Why De'Zhaun Stribling is the perfect fit for San Francisco 49ers?
The Ole Miss WR is everything Shanahan had been hunting for.
Stribling has NFL size at 6-2, 207 pounds, and he ripped off a 4.36 40-yard dash at this year's combine. He is the best type of vertical threat the Niners could shop for in Round 2 with his size, his strong hands, and his willingness to be a blocker. All qualities the 49ers prioritize in their receivers.
Even Stribling knows his strong suit, and that's exactly what he aims to bring to the Levi's Stadium.
"Yeah, my physicality, my run after catch, and having reliable hands. So, all those three things kind of fit into one and kind of just being there for the quarterback and being there for the team," Stribling explained how he plans on translating those skills to immediately start contributing to the team.
Stribling has all the right tools to fill out the gaps in 49ers receiver room that held them back in against the Chiefs in 2024.
Fighting for a higher spot in the current pecking order and waiting for that breakout opportunity, while being the reliable WR2 or WR3 the team needs him to be, is largely what his first NFL season will look like.
