Ole Miss football recruiting has been focused on defense with the signing of ten defensive players in the early signing period. Added to the future of Ole Miss football is another defensive tackle.

Many of us Ole Miss football fans have already noticed the distinct focus on defense within this 2018 recruiting class. It’s obvious coach Matt Luke has seen the deficiencies in-depth on that side of the ball and is determined to rebuild it. If that is indeed the case then he has covered on defensive linemen.

Of the 14 early signees 10 are defensive players. Of those 10 there are 4 defensive tackles. The grind of SEC trench play is brutal and especially for a defensive lineman and especially a tough defensive tackle. Of course, depth is very important and Ole Miss has signed some of the best. The player we are profiling here could possibly be the best DT in class. OHT introduces you to Hal Northern.

When we say Hal Northern is a big time get for the Ole Miss football family we really aren’t exaggerating. Of course, at 6’3″ and 293 lbs they certainly don’t get much bigger. However, there is more to Hal Northern’s size.

Out of Northwest Community College Hal Northern is another beast in the 2018 class of recruits. He does have the size and strength to shed blocks. He is not one-dimensional by any stretch and has a good inside or outside move to get into the backfield.

One look at Northern’s highlight reel and you can see for yourself he is a run-stopper who has great speed and quickness. He can shed a block and finish the play with incredibly fast closing speed. The quickness also show in his hand work.

With his talent, experience in the JUCO ranks and his incredible ability, I believe Northern makes an immediate impact on the defensive line.

Welcome To The Family

Of course, he will have plenty of competition trying to find a spot on the depth chart. However Northern is a very talented defensive tackle. I believe we see a lot of huge plays from him over the next two seasons.

Next: An Interesting Postseason!

This ride still isn’t over and we can expect more signees in this class in February. Of course there will likely be more defensive players but they may not be this big. OHT wants to thank Hal Northern for his choice in Ole Miss and welcome him to the Ole Miss family. Hotty Toddy!
