Ole Miss softball was back in action Tuesday night in Oxford as they hosted the Alcorn State Braves in a rare midweek doubleheader.

Ole Miss softball (27-18, 5-13) was back home in Oxford coming off a two-game series sweep over UTEP in El Paso. Tuesday night they would begin a three-game midweek stretch with a doubleheader against Alcorn State (11-29, 8-3). Alcorn State was entering the Ole Miss Softball Complex on a home series sweep over Alabama A&M this past weekend.

In game-one the Rebels wasted no time getting started and never looked back. Ole Miss softball scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. They then followed it with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take the 5-0 lead into the 3rd. The Rebels weren’t done scoring and added a whopping 8 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Still not finished the Rebels completed the ten-run rule 5 inning game with 1 more run in the bottom of the 4th to secure the 14-0 win.

The 14-0 win over Alcorn State was the Rebels fifth consecutive win and once again proved they are in tournament form again this season. Of course, the Rebels have had a slight break from SEC play which will once again be on the slate this weekend as they travel to Arkansas. The break from SEC play was a well needed remedy for the Rebels and should have them primed to make a strong run in the remainder of the SEC schedule. For now we’ll enjoy this non-conference win by the numbers.

Game-One By The Numbers

More from Ole Miss Softball

Junior right-hander Brittany Finney drew the game-one start in the circle for the Rebels. Finney went 3.0 innings and allowed no runs and just 2 hits. Finney had 4 Ks. Senior right-hander Elisha Jahnke entered in the 4th and went 2.0 innings. Jahnke allowed no runs on just 1 hit and had 2 Ks.

At The Plate

In game-one there were 8 Rebels who combined for 11 hits while 2 Rebels had multiple hit games. Senior Elantra Cox went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI while sophomore Kaylee Horton went 2 for 2 at the plate with 1 RBI. Junior Izzy Werdann and freshmen Gabby Alvarez and Abbey Latham (HR) all went 1 for 1. Werdann and Alvarez each had 1 RBI while Latham had 2 RBI.

Sophomore Autumn Gillespie, and seniors Bry Castro and Paige McKinney all went 1 for 2 at the plate. Gillespie had 2 RBI while Castro had 4 RBI. Senior Alex Schneider and junior Brittany Finney each had 1 RBI. This was a game where the Rebels were on fire at the plate and it showed in the blowout 14-0 win.

Game-Two Alcorn State

Ole Miss softball had the obvious momentum headed into game-two against the Braves. Of course, the Rebels jumped out front early with 1 run in the bottom of the 1st. Alcorn State answered tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the 3rd. However, the Rebels exploded with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 4-1 lead into the 4th. Holding Alcorn State scoreless the remainder of the game, the Rebels added 1 run in the 4th, 2 runs in the 5th and 1 run in the 6th to command a 8-1 win.

This win gave the Rebels their sixth consecutive win and with another midweek game Wednesday against UT-Martin the Rebels could have a serious head of steam headed into the weekend SEC series. Of course, for now lets look at this game by the numbers.

Game-Two By The Numbers

Sophomore right-hander Morgan Bruce drew the start for the Rebels in the circle. Bruce went 5.0 innings and allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits. Bruce had 4 Ks. Freshman left hander Anna Borgen entered in the 6th and went 2.0 innings finishing out the circle for the Rebels. Borgen allowed no hits and had 2 Ks in 7 batters faced.

At the plate there were 5 Rebels who combined for 7 hits with 2 Rebels having multiple hit games. Senior Elantra Cox went 2 for 2 while freshman Jessica Puk went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Freshman Amanda Roth went 1 for 3 (HR) with 2 RBI on what was her 4th HR of the season. Sophomore Kaylee Horton and senior Bry Castro also went 1 for 3. Horton had 1 RBI. Freshman Abbey Latham had 1 RBI.

Right now the Rebels are playing really good softball and it has shown in their past six games. This team is built on momentum and a six game win streak will go a long way. Of course the Rebels aren’t done with their non-conference stretch.
