OHT has been looking at the different position groups on the offensive side of Ole Miss football and now we take a look at the quarterbacks.

Ole Miss football kicks off the 2019 season next month and we have been busy looking at the different position groups. We began on the offensive side of the ball with tight ends, then we looked at the running backs, wide receivers and offensive line. Now we wrap up the offense by looking at the Rebels quarterbacks.

The signal caller is where the excitement begins and in 2019 this will be an exciting position group. The Rebels will have a relatively young group of quarterbacks who will have to be ready to play regardless of their lack of experience. The Rebels have seven quarterbacks on the roster and we will look at each beginning with the starter.

Redshirt freshman Matt Corral will be the starter when the Rebels travel to face Memphis in the season opener. Corral was the No.2 QB in 2018 and appeared in four games prior to be redshirted. Corral completed 16 of 22 attempts for 239 yards and 2 TDs with 1 INT. On the ground Corral had 101 yards on 13 carries with 2 TDs.

After Corral the depth chart gets a little cloudy with no real idea who will step into the No.2 spot. During the spring we got to see several new faces and they could all find the backup role in the Rich Rod offense. Freshman Grant Tisdale, freshman Kinkead Dent and junior Grant Restmeyer all saw action in the Grove Bowl.

Other quarterbacks available on the roster are freshmen John Rhys Plumlee, Sellers Shy and Brice Johnson. When we say the Rebels depth chart is young it is simply no understatement. Coach Rich Rodriguez is very aware he has the youngest QB roster in the nation.

This could be a huge season for Matt Corral but he will have to stay healthy and not force a lesser experienced QB being thrown in the fire when they aren’t really ready. We will have to wait until next month to see what this position group can really do this season.

OHT looks forward to seeing Ole Miss football in action on August 31 when they open the 2019 campaign on the road in Memphis. Good luck to these quarterbacks and the rest of our Ole Miss Rebels in 2019. Hotty Toddy!
