Pete Golding and his staff had made every phone call possible to bring Cecilia (La.) ATH Braylon Calais to Oxford.
The announcement from the 4-star prospect on Monday shattered all of those hopes, as Calais committed to LSU. The Rebels were in a dogfight with LSU all along in locking down the No. 5 ATH in the country per Rivals.
LSU lands Braylon Calais over Ole Miss football
However, after a visit to Baton Rouge over the weekend and a one-on-one sit down with Lane Kiffin later, things started looking gleam for the Rebels, as the Crystal Ball predictions instantly favored the Tigers.
“They’ve definitely been on me,” Calais told Rivals about his decision. “Knowing I’m the top athlete in Louisiana, I’m high on their board. The pressure on me has been drastically increasing with Coach Lane Kiffin hitting me up. They’re showing love all over the place.”
“Seeing Braylon Calais out there, from small-town Cecilia in Tiger Stadium, that would be huge,” he added.
It's a hard-hitting loss for Golding since the multi-sport athlete could have excelled at RB, WR, and safety. Even Keegan Croucher, one of the top 2027 Ole Miss commits, had done his part in luring Calais.
Ex-LSU staffer Frank Wilson was Golding's ace in the hole for closing on talents like Calais, but Calais's dream to play in the Death Valley just overpowered all efforts this time.
“Bringing LSU back to what it’s supposed to be on and off the field,” he added on what excites him about the Tigers. “I feel like the fit would be a good fit, especially with the offense they run.”
