As the must-watch chaotic duo of college football, Lane Kiffin and Paul Finebaum never have, never will run out of jabs for another.
Their 'Miley Cyrus' origin story has to be one of the best headline-making dramas in college football, but there was a whole backstory that led to one of the most heated head coach-analyst feuds.
Paul Finebaum spoke with OutKick's Clay Travis about how a particular precedent directly led to the spite.
As a Tennessee native, Finebaum was enraged when Kiffin left a Vols roster that looked promising enough to probably make it to the National Championship next season for his "dream job" at USC in 2010.
"My relationship with Kiffin? Well, let’s just say I hated his guts when he left Tennessee. And I think most of Tennessee felt the same way," Finebaum said.
The Vols went 7-6 under Kiffin, which was a decent record since they were coming off a legendary Philip Fulmer era. However, soon after Kiffin left, Tennessee started slowly crumbling under Derek Dooley. It took them almost a decade and three head coaches to find Josh Heupel and build a stable, winning program.
Somewhere, both are still holding onto that grudge. More importantly, they never fail to rub it in each other's faces. Kiffin's latest jab is proof enough.
I see you Paul 🧡 @Vol_Football @OleMissFB

How all of this is related to the 'Miley Cyrus' comment
The rage followed Finebaum to 2013 when he was just about to begin his career with the SEC Network.
"In 2013, the SEC Network had just hired me, but it wasn’t launching until 2014, so they put me on College GameDay. I’m sitting in a meeting, and Chris Fowler says, ‘We’re gonna come to you and ask about the quarterback situation at USC.’ And I thought, who cares," Finebaum recollected.
"So when they asked me live, I just went off on Kiffin. I said he’d never have gotten his job without his father. And I capped it off by saying, ‘Lane Kiffin is the Miley Cyrus of college football'."
"Now, keep in mind, Miley Cyrus wasn’t exactly having a great moment at that time. I walked off the set, nobody said a word to me, and I had no idea Kiffin was still one of the golden boys," Finebaum revealed how the whole situation unfolded that day.
The rest is pure, golden history in the pages of the finest college football dramas.
