For everyone who thought Deuce Alexander was Trinidad Chambliss's most likely QB2, Pete Golding's spring assessment just changed the whole narrative.
The word around Oxford had Auburn transfer Knight as the QB2 favorite. But it turned out to be exactly that, just a word on the street. Things inside the Manning Center are still far from a lock.
And Pete Golding's latest assessment of Texas A&M flip freshman AJ Maddox just made it more clear.
Pete Golding on AJ Maddox's progress this spring
"Super talented. We've always loved AJ's arm talent, ability to extend some plays, and continue to develop his body in the weight room," Golding commented on Maddox.
"I think he's got a much better understanding of the offense. I think consistency and performance obviously is the big things that we're looking for. You see the flashes. Can make all the throws. I think he's just consistently making really good decisions. But, he's competing his butt off. He's coming in every day and going to work and stringing together some good practices."
The progress is clear, and it sounds promising for a freshman. On top of it, Maddox's improvement is personal for Golding, whose bond with Anthony Maddox, AJ's father, goes way back.
"I mean, obviously, that's personal to me. I was involved in the recruitment, and obviously, having played with his dad. AJ was committed to A&M when I first came over, so it was really late recruitment piece."
Personal ties aside, Maddox will still need to compete at his ceiling to even have a shot at being QB2. The standard is up that high thanks to Chambliss.
Just a few days back, Baker commented on Knight's progress, and from it, Knight didn't seem to be falling behind in the QB2 race either.
“He has all the talent in the world. He’s progressed very well. Quicker than expected, to be honest with you,” Baker told the media. “He’s doing some really good things. He adds an element — obviously size, speed — that nobody in the room really has.”
In all the decision is anyone's guess between Maddox, Knight, and Walker Howard.
Golding even said it out loud that " this isn't something to where, 'Hey, here's one, two, three in that order' by any means."
