It's time for another Oxford homecoming. Pete Golding has centered his staff overhaul on one principle: bringing as many alumni back to Oxford. A majority of his new staff marked their return to the Grove after signing with Golding.
Their former defensive coordinator, Patrick Toney, leaving for the NFL opened up another spot for the Rebels' DC to orchestrate another nostalgic reunion.
It seems like Golding is already on the track with Kansas State co-DC and former Ole Miss safety Marcus Woodson.
Pete Golding found Ole Miss's next DC?
"Ole Miss is targeting Kansas State co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson for a role on its defensive staff, sources tell CBS Sports. Before being hired at Kansas State, worked most recently for teams like Arkansas, Florida State and Auburn," CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz wrote.
Toney left the Rebels stranded in the middle of offseason, announcing a move to Atlanta after just seven weeks of signing with Ole Miss. It wasn't exactly a shocker though, given Toney has been an NFL guy through and through.
Handing off the DC reins as the Rebels' former DC was a hard enough task in itself for Golding. Finding a replacement in the middle of an offseason made it a whole lot worse for Golding.
Not only is Golding saddled with the job to find the Rebels' next DC, but he also needs to find one who is brilliant enough to maintain the standard he set in his three years as Rebels defensive mastermind.
And, not to forget, someone who could keep up with their latest golden standard: the College Football Playoff.
Only the regular season can tell how well Golding’s reunion staff can parlay their Oxford history into another historic postseason run.
