Ole Miss football target and 247sports composite 5-star Cam Akers of Clinton(MS) High school named his top 10 on Wednesday. The Rebels, along with five other SEC teams, made the cut.

Mississippi’s top prospect, and one of the most coveted recruit’s in the nation, for the 2017 class, Cam Akers, plays quarterback for the Clinton Arrows. He threw for 2,331 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. However, it is running back that he will play on the next level.

In fact, even from the quarterback spot last fall, he rushed for 1,418 yards and 16 scores. High school film and camp performances have propelled him to the lofty 5-star status. Here’s how he ranks by the four major recruiting sites:

  • 247sports – 4-star | 40th overall | 2nd best RB | top-ranked prospect in MS
  • ESPN – 4-star | 23rd overall prospect | 2nd best RB | top-ranked prospect in MS
  • Scout – 5-star | 22nd overall prospect | 2nd best RB | top-ranked prospect in MS
  • Rivals – 4-star | 23rd overall prospect | 2nd best RB | top-ranked prospect in MS

The 10 schools he says he “will be taking a closer look at over the new few months,” are: Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Georgia and California.

Considering how big of a priority schools like Tennessee, Ohio State and Georgia, have made Akers, he would be GIANT pickup for Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss. At one time, he was committed to the Crimson Tide, so they should also factor into the equation all the way until the end.

In somewhat of a surprise, Mississippi State did not make this list, but with the recent addition of Kylin Hill, it appears the Bulldogs are more than happy with where they are at the running back position.

Not only would Akers provide the Rebel program with the top prospect in their backyard, and another 5-star target in their boat, but he would also provide the biggest splash pickup at the running back spot in the tenure of Hugh Freeze. One of the few spots that Freeze and his staff have yet to get a 5-star quality player at is running back. Akers would be a bonafide superstar in the Ole Miss offense. Especially teaming up alongside Shea Patterson.

Ole Miss has long been considered the favorite, following his Alabama commitment, at least. Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Butch Jones, Les Miles and others are making him feel the love, though, and it could be a tense process.

In the end, though, and especially once the NCAA investigation is over and done with, expect Akers to commit to the home state Rebels. With Akers and Patterson on the roster, Ole Miss would not only have two potential Heisman candidates, but two potential first round NFL Draft selections.
