Ole Miss Football: Shea’s Week-One Game Garners National Attention

OXFORD, MS - NOVEMBER 26: Shea Patterson
OXFORD, MS - NOVEMBER 26: Shea Patterson

Ole Miss football was victorious in their week one match-up against South Alabama. Shea Patterson was a large part of the 47-27 Rebels win.

It’s not hard to like Shea Patterson if you are a Ole Miss football fan. We know exactly how good we think he is. I mean we’ve seen it. Well, we’ve seen glimpses. I honestly believe Shea will run the gauntlet this season and totally shock the college football world. However, I’m a Rebel homer and a Patterson fan. So, I might be a bit biased I admit.

However, Shea’s numbers from week one were phenomenal. He went 28 of 35 for 429 yards and 4 TDs. Simply outstanding when you consider there were no interceptions. Shea has progressed over the off-season and it’s obvious. Of course, his reads were great all night and his throws were on the money.

Making National Waves

More from Ole Miss Football

Although originally being snubbed by the Manning Award watch-list, last Saturday Patterson’s performance was well noted nationally. In fact, Shea Patterson was named to the Davey O’Brien ‘Great 8’ list.

The Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week award is awarded to one of eight quarterbacks selected each week by the Davey O’Brien award selection committee.

It’s easy to see Shea is included in some really good company from the eight week one honorees. However, Missouri QB Drew Lock was the only other SEC quarterback on the impressive list.

As reported by Rebels247,

"Joining Patterson on the Great 8 week one list are California’s Ross Bowers, Lamar Jackson of Louisville, Missouri’s Drew Lock, TaQuon Marshall of Georgia Tech, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State. ~Rebels 247"

The Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week winner will be announced later today.

More Attention For No.20

It’s been well documented by myself and others our belief Shea Patterson will be in the Heisman Trophy talk at some point this season. In fact, SEC Network analyst Marcus Spears has Shea as his dark horse for the top trophy in college football.

With the threats Shea has at the WR position and especially AJ Brown and DaMarkus Lodge, he certainly has the supporting cast to make a Heisman run. I fully expect Shea to continue to play smart football and put up huge numbers doing it. Of course, if the cards fall right for Shea and the Longo offense this can be a spectacular year for the young QB.
