Unfortunately for Ole Miss football injuries are a part of the game. Saturday at Cal was no exception and the injury bug had our names.

Of course, Ole Miss already saw the loss of red-shirt freshman center Eli Johnson in the UT-Martin game to a torn ACL. Eli has undergone surgery but will be out for the rest of the 2017 season. Eli was the number-two guy behind Sean Rawlings.

Injuries are a part of college football. It’s no different for Ole Miss football and this past Saturday at Cal saw us with a myriad of injuries on both sides of the ball. It’s always unfortunate to see a player go down with any injury but especially a season ending injury.

More from Ole Miss Football

Luckily for Ole Miss football the injuries we saw against Cal won’t result in the latter. All players injured in the game should be returning to play at some point. The question is when? Apparently as serious as they all looked during the game the window is 1-2 weeks for all.

Immediately in the game we saw AJ Brown go down early in the first quarter with a sprained MCL. Of course, AJ was up moving around and exited the field walking to the locker-room. Word is AJ will be ok and could be available for the Bama game.

Sean Rawlings went down later in the first half with a severely sprained ankle which did require surgery Monday. Matt Luke noted Rawlings in his Monday presser,

"“He’ll have the surgery. He will probably start the running progression maybe at the end of this week. They’ve got to let the wound heel. He’s probably 50/50 for Alabama, if I had to give it my best guess. I’m not sure about that right now.” ~Coach Matt Luke"

Other Injuries

Of course, we saw Gary Wunderlich go out of the game with a pulled hamstring in the first half also with a pulled hamstring. Wunderlich is said to be doing well and should be out 1-2 weeks as well.

Corner-back Jalen Julius went down with a shoulder injury which Luke stated “I’m not sure if it was just a stinger or a separation.” He also listed Julius as a 1-2 week outlook.

There will be injuries in football, it just happens. However, it gives us a chance to see our depth at specific positions and see the future of Ole Miss football. The good thing with the recovery from the Cal game is the Rebels have a bye-week this week before traveling to Tuscaloosa for the Bama game.
