The 2018 Ole Miss football recruiting class is shaping into a very fine group of players for head coach Matt Luke and it has had its share of surprises.

Being a fan of Ole Miss football has always been full of surprises. Of course, lately the surprises have been surrounding coach Matt Luke’s success surrounding Ole Miss recruiting. While most Grove Grinders are about stuff which causes us grief, this Grinder focuses on something good.

Recruiting season is always supposed to be an exciting part of college football. In past years the Ole Miss Rebels have seen some great success in the recruiting wars. Of course, this year was not expected to be very good for Luke and his staff. Many of the pundits had predicted we would finish last in the SEC in recruiting. Yes this class has surprised everybody.

Naturally, we were surprised by the job done by this staff prior to the early signing period. There were indeed some last-minute surprises within the 14 players who signed letters of intent on December 20th. Now in final days before NSD we are once again seeing some good surprises from this staff and recruiting class.

Recruiting season is supposed to be fun for college football fans and it can be. However, you have to be willing to accept some ups and downs during recruiting season. The higher you set your sights for top players the better it can be but you don’t always get what you want.

The closer it gets to NSD the tougher the recruiting gets as each team is vying for the top undecided talent in the nation. Just last week top corner-back Cam’ron Jones had Ole Miss in his final three teams. Unfortunately Jones chose Nebraska as his landing zone. For many Ole Miss fans the loss of Jones was a letdown. Of course, that’s just part of being a Ole Miss football recruiting fan.

However, on the flip side there are some really good surprises which happen. Just this past weekend Ole Miss gained a commitment from LB prospect Kevontae’ Ruggs of Montgomery, Alabama. With his brother being a WR at Bama it was nice stealing a top recruit from Saban’s backyard.

There was also news last night stating top running-back prospect Charles Strong had cancelled his upcoming official visit to Arkansas. Strong was on his Ole Miss official visit this past weekend. Although there has been no word of an official announcement this is a good sign he has shut down his recruitment. We can expect a commitment from Strong in coming days. Will it be Ole Miss?

OHT BREAKING NEWS

Are you ready for more recruiting surprises? At time of this release it had been announced OT Hamilton Hall of Atlanta had officially committed to Ole Miss. Like Kevontae’ Ruggs, Hall was also on campus this past weekend for his official Ole Miss visit. We’ll have more on Hamilton Hall, his visit and his decision later.
