Who? Wait what? Yes, Stan Torgerson never played a down of football at Ole Miss. In fact, he was never enrolled as a student at Ole Miss. However, he is certainly a legend.
Known as the ‘Voice of The Rebels’ Stan would color and illustrate Ole Miss football for almost 20 years. As a young broadcaster he hired on to do color commentary for Ole Miss football in 1955.
If you were a Rebel fan in the early days of Rebel broadcasting then you heard his unique voice and his excitement for the game. Of course, it didn’t matter who was playing or who was winning. He colored the game with red and blue passion.
In his days as Ole Miss play by play commentator, he would color 176 football games and 462 basketball games. Torgerson helped create the Rebel Radio network and Rebel football coaches show.
Stan Torgerson was honored in 2000 by the College Hall of Fame with the ‘Contribution to Amateur Football Award’. In 1993, Torgerson was selected as Chairman of the Mississippi Heisman Trophy Committee, a position he would hold until his death in 2006.
