Ole Miss football fans will always like the underdog and when you know he is a dynamic player like Chad Kelly you can help but love his chances.

Ask any Ole Miss football fan around about Chad Kelly and they will all tell you he is a great quarterback with loads of talent and potential. Not all Ole Miss fans always appreciated his antics at times but we all loved to watch him play. Were we surprised when he was taking in the last pick of the draft aka ‘Mr Irrelevant’? Yes, either you were surprised he went as low as he did or you were surprised he was drafted at all.

Honestly in a day and age where NFL teams are very careful about who they draft Chad Kelly maybe was lucky. NFL teams don’t normally go after pick spots on players with baggage and Kelly has his share. Of course, his exceptional talent and his behavior at Ole Miss under Hugh Freeze is what got him drafted. Chad Kelly is a great player and is a pretty cool guy if you ever have a chance to meet him.

Looking Back At Kelly

More from Ole Miss Football

To say Chad Kelly was fun to watch play football is an understatement. He was dynamic as a quarterback both from the pocket and scrambling. He had an arm which could make the hardest throws seem easy and was usually very accurate.

In just one and half seasons at Ole Miss Kelly completed 503 of 786 passes for an incredible 6,800 yards and 50 TDs while only throwing 21 INTs. Kelly was also very good with his legs and finished his career in Oxford with 841 yards rushing on 187 attempts, a 4.7 YPC average. Kelly had 15 rushing TDs while he was quarterback for the Rebels.

Where’s Kelly Now?

Chad Kelly is currently playing QB in Denver for the Broncos and is having a very good training camp. He is making all of his throws with velocity and accuracy and has shown he can use his feet in the pocket. Kelly has also shown he can still motor with his legs and run if he needs to. He is by far the most athletic quarterback on the Broncos depth chart.

After this past Sundays scrimmage there was an obvious focus from the head coach on Kelly’s day and his ability. According to Tim Lynch of MileHighReport.com,

"“He’s a playmaker,” Joseph said. “He’s always been a playmaker. You watch his college tape two years ago, he just makes plays. It doesn’t always look pretty, but he just makes plays.” ~Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph"

Of course, it remains to be seen how well Chad Kelly continues to develop. For now we know Kelly is healthy from his hiatus because of wrist surgery and he is obviously on point so far. Right now Kelly is hot and that could create a problem for second string QB Paxton Lynch. We’ll continue to follow Kelly throughout training camp. Good luck Chad. Hotty Toddy!
