When you think of Ole Miss football series I’m sure your mind doesn’t immediately jump to the Texas Tech Red Raiders but the teams do have a history.

When Ole Miss football kicks off the 2018 season against Texas Tech it will mark the sixth time the two schools have met. The Rebels hold the 3-2 edge in the series which goes back to their first meeting in 1986 in the Independence Bowl. The Rebels got the 2017 win in that meeting. Ole Miss and Texas Tech would meet again in a Independence Bowl rematch in 1998 which the Rebels would once again top the Red Raiders 35-17.

The Rebels and Red Raiders would meet again in back to back regular season games. In 2002 they met in Lubbock and the Red Raiders took the 42-28 win. The following season in 2003 the Red Raiders evened the series between the two schools with a 49-45 win over the Rebels in Oxford. The two teams last meeting came in 2009 when they met in the Cotton Bowl in which the No.20 ranked Rebels shocked the No.8 ranked Red Raiders 47-34. All three of the Rebels series wins have been  bowl wins.

More from Ole Miss Football

OK, so five games isn’t much of a history but Ole Miss and Texas Tech have been connected in other ways going back way before their last meeting. In 1977 Texas Tech head coach Steve Sloan was hired by Ole Miss. Sloan had three seasons at Tech and had compiled a 23-12 record. Sloan spent five seasons as the Rebels head coach posting a  20-34-1  record had one season with over four wins.

What comes around must really go around because Texas Tech would get it full circle when former Ole Miss and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was hired to replace the legendary Mike Leach. Tuberville coached four seasons and posted a 25-20 record before slipping out of Oxford shortly after the 1998 regular season in the middle of the night headed to Auburn. Tuberville showed up in Lubbock in 2010 and coached three seasons posting a 20-17 record. ‘Pine Box’ Tubby would leave after an on the field incident.

"“Speaking of “Pine Box” Tubby, if he ever sets foot in Lubbock again, he likely will need a good pine box because he is still loathed in West Texas.”~Matthew Conner, Wreckem Red"

So you see there is some history shared between Ole Miss and Texas Tech when they take the field Saturday. Apparently Rebels and Red Raiders also share the same sentiments towards ‘Pine Box’ Tubby according to Wreckem Red site expert and contributor Matthew Conner who we introduced in the OHT Week-one OM/TT Preview.

Maybe Rebels and Raiders actually have more in common than they realize we realize or would even really want to admit. As long as we don’t have the same number of series wins this Sunday I can live with the rest of the history. Hotty Toddy!
