Monday afternoon Ole Miss football head coach Matt Luke had his weekly press conference and naturally we wanted to hear what he had to say.

Ole Miss football coach Matt Luke kicked off the Rebels Homecoming week with his Monday press conference. Rebels fans were anxiously curious to hear what coach Luke had to say about the ugly Saturday night loss in Baton Rouge. Of course, Luke discussed the LSU loss, injuries and the game Saturday against UL-Monroe.

Coach Matt Luke began his press conference with an opening statement before taking questions from some of the media members who were present. Luke opened with credit to the No.5 LSU Tigers noting they are a very good team. Luke then discussed both the lack of discipline and inconsistency in the match-up Saturday. According to OleMissSports,

"“After watching the tape, give a lot of credit to LSU. They’re a good football team, Top 5 program. We didn’t have the discipline or the consistency that it takes to go win on the road in this conference.” ~Coach Matt Luke"

Naturally as expected Matt Luke shouldered the responsibility for the loss and the team not playing well enough to win. It was easy to see Matt Luke was disappointed in the team’s performance after having spent so much time trying to get things to look better on the field.

"“As a head coach, you have a vision of what you want your team to look like and when it doesn’t look that way you look at yourself first. We’re going to continue to work and get the problems fixed but that was disappointing that you work hard and you have this vision and when it doesn’t show up the way you want it to, you’re disappointed.” ~Coach Matt Luke"

Luke On Injuries

More from Ole Miss Football

Of course Ole Miss football has already had to deal with the injury bug on the defensive side of the ball and it got worse Saturday night. Senior safety CJ Moore suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the game against the Tigers which puts depth pressure on an already thin secondary.

The Ole Miss secondary is already without Jaylon Jones and Montrell Custis who are both out for the season and there is no real timeline yet on CJ Moore. According to Luke he feels Moore will be out a couple of weeks if not indefinitely and said he would be out this week for sure.

Luke said he expects for the defense to get senior Victor Evans back and in light of the secondary depth issue Rebels junior DB/RB Armani Linton will be go back to the defensive side of the ball. Luke noted Linton was skilled on that side of the ball and knows what is going on.

Luke Talks ULM

It didn’t take coach Matt Luke long to change the subject to the upcoming Homecoming match-up against UL-Monroe (2-3). Luke commented on his respect for ULM head coach Viator and the job he does. Luke mentioned what first came to mind is the Warhawks 21-20 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Since that game the Warhawks have lost three straight which included a 48-10 loss to Texas A&M and most recently a 46-14 loss to Georgia Southern.

"“They have a really athletic quarterback, and he’s their leading rusher. Marcus Green who is from right down the road here is their leading receiver. He does a really good job in the slot, and they are very active on defense. We’ll have our work cut out for us, but again after a tough loss we are looking forward to getting back on the practice field and going back to work.” ~Coach Matt Luke"

The Rebels are currently a 3 touchdown favorite against the Warhawks and with the way the defense has played it could be a much closer game than what is projected. So far the Rebels defense has allowed 2,594 yards or 518.8 yards per game giving up 1,044 yards on the ground and 1,550 thru the air.
