Ole Miss Basketball: Rebels lose SEC road game against Hogs

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball were on the road trying to extend their win streak to three games but came up short against Arkansas.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball (8-7, 3-5) were back in action Wednesday night as they faced off against the Arkansas Razorbacks (13-4, 5-4). The Rebels entered the midweek SEC road game coming off a 61-50 win over Texas A&M after also getting a 64-46 win over Miss State. The Rebels wouldn’t find their third straight win falling to the Hogs 74-59.

Ole Miss was strong early in the first half going back and forth with Arkansas. However, the Rebels fell behind and trailed 22-13 with 10:09 left before the break. Arkansas took control and didn’t look back taking a 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, Ole Miss played better but couldn’t overcome the Hogs despite three Rebels scoring in double-digits. OHT looks at the Rebels’ loss by the numbers.

As a team, the Rebels shot 25 of 57 or 43.9% from the field while the Hogs shot 26 of 54 or 48.1% from inside the arc. The 3-point line was off-limits for the Rebels who went 1 for 16 or 6.3% from beyond the arc. In contrast, Arkansas was 7 of 17 or 41.2 from outside the 3-point line. From the free-throw line, the Rebels were 8 of 12 or 66.7% while the Hogs shot 15 of 21 or 71.4% from the charity stripe.

The Rebels scored 15 points off 12 Arkansas turnovers while the Hogs scored 15 points off 9 Ole Miss turnovers. The Rebels had 8 steals and 6 blocked shots while Arkansas had 6 steals and 6 blocked shots. Arkansas outrebounded the Rebels 37-29. The Hogs bench was responsible for 34 points while the Rebels bench only contributed 11 points.

Leading all Rebels in scoring was Devontae Shuler who had 19 points. Shuler was also responsible for 1 steal, 1 assist, and 3 rebounds. Following Shuler was Jarkel Joiner who had 11 points, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 1 rebound. Also scoring in double digits was Luis Rodriguez who had 10 points to go with his 2 steals, 2 assists, and 3 rebounds. KJ Buffen added 5 points with 3 rebounds while  Romello White added 3 points with 1 steal, 1 blocked shot, 1 assist, and 8 rebounds.

Off the Rebels bench, Matthew Murrell added 3 points with 1 blocked shot, 2 assists, and 1 rebound. Khadim Sy had 2 points with 2 blocked shots and 1 rebound. Dimencio Vaughn, Sammy Hunter, and Robert Allen each added 2 points. Vaughn had 1 steal and 1 blocked shot while Hunter had 1 blocked shot and 1 rebound. Allen added 2 steals, 1 assist, and 2 rebounds.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball will be back in action Saturday evening as the Rebels travel to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs (9-6, 2-6). The Rebels lost 78-74 in Oxford in the last meeting with the Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 5 pm CT and the game will be aired on the SEC Network. Good luck to coach Davis and the Rebels.
