Coach Mike Bianco and No.6 Ole Miss baseball picked up their second win in the State Farm College Baseball Showdown Sunday over No.3 Texas Tech.
No.6 Ole Miss baseball (2-0) picked up their second win in the season-opening State Farm College Baseball Showdown. The Rebels opened up their season and the highly anticipated showdown with a 7-3 win over No.10 TCU Saturday. Sunday, the Rebels faced No.3 Texas Tech and picked up a nailbiting 5-4 win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Red Raiders struck first with 2 runs in the top of the second inning. The Rebels answered by scoring all 5 of their runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Texas Tech scored 1 run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Rebels lead to 5-3 and scored one more run in the top of the ninth to make it a 5-4 game. The Rebels hung on to win. In game-two, there were 4 Rebels who combined for 5 hits. Leading all Rebels at the plate was Jacob Gonzalez who went 2 for 4 (1 HR) with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Next up was Hayden Leatherwood who went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI. Hayden Dunhurst went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored and also had 1 stolen base. Kevin Graham also went 1 for 3.
One the mound, Gunnar Hoglund (W, 1-0) drew the start for Mike Bianco and the Rebels. Hoglund went 5.1 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 11 Ks and 3 BBs. Coach Bianco went to his bullpen and Austin Miller entered in the sixth inning. Miller went 1.2 innings allowing 1 hit with 2 Ks.
Bianco went back to the bullpen and Max Cioffi took the hill in the eighth inning. Cioffi went 1.2 innings allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit with 3 Ks and 4 BBs. Mike Bianco went back to the bullpen again and Luke Baker entered in the ninth. Baker faced one batter and allowed 1 hit. Bianco went back to the bullpen and Braden Forsyth (S, 1-0) entered. Forsyth had 1 BB but closed out the game and picked up the save. Hoglund earned the win.
